If you choose to build your own house or villa in Krabi, don't neglect the outside of your home when it comes to planning. You'll find you spend most of your time outdoors in this climate, so a proper garden area is one of the keys to a successful project.

How does your garden grow?

A TROPICAL garden designed for outdoor living is surely one of the reasons for moving to a country like Thailand, where the warm climate means the pleasures of dining and lounging al fresco are possible for most of the year.

Yet when it comes to building houses and villas, gardens are almost always the most overlooked aspect. There is a temptation to focus solely on the building itself and the interior design while forgetting that the outdoors - where you will spend most of your time - needs to be planned in as meticulous detail.

A good garden is not only a frame for your home; it is another ‘room’ of your house. A proper design will bring the landscape to life, whether you have a small, intimate space, screened for privacy, or a large, open area.

The trend for indoor / outdoor living means the garden can now also come into your home and many new house designs include bathrooms or shower areas open to the sky, or semi-open corridors filled with light and foliage.

When choosing plants for this climate, it is recommended to seek local advice - what looks like a small shrub in the garden centre may well turn into a monster that takes over your tiny patio! Bamboo, and members of the ginger family, are notorious for monopolising space.

If you will be away for some months in the year, you should pick plants that need minimal care and attention. Even something you may consider 'simple', like a stretch of lawn, without constant watering will quickly turn dry and yellow.

But be it minimal or lush, don’t make your garden an afterthought: integrate it into your master plan so that you can be sure to have the outdoor space you need.
